One of the best things to write is a book for children. Children are generally everybody’s stress relievers. Seeing one kid being able to read a word or recognize a picture makes us already giddy. It is such a cute sight – children reading books.
If you aim to write a children’s book or probably already finished writing one, you surely want to publish it, right? Publishing may sound a little too difficult but fret not! We will give you your much needed advices on how to publish a children’s book.
Consider a lot of things. Publishing a book is not a walk in the park. Heck, some people cannot even publish their article in the school paper. Kidding aside, self-publishing would require a lot of things. The first thing on the list is money. Children’s books are more difficult to publish mainly because they have a limited audience. Say for example, a young adult novel can be published through ebooks since young adults surely have access to the internet. For children, however, one should publish it in hard copy. The market for children’s books is also very competitive.
Choose an illustrator. It is important to note that children are generally visual learners. Have you ever seen a children’s book with no pictures in it? Basically! A children’s book should have visuals since visuals make a child learn faster. They associate words through pictures. This is why you should choose one expert illustrator. You don’t really need a famous one since that will cost you money. There are a lot of freelance artists out there who’d be willing enough to support you in your project. Better yet, you can ask a friend to become your book’s official illustrator. That way, communication is easier and work will entail more fun.
Fund it out. After choosing an illustrator and deciding on what illustration to include in your book, start asking for funds. You do not need to put dirt on your shirt and act like a beggar along the streets just to raise money. Simply tell people your purpose. You can ask funds from your family and friends. There is also one option that can definitely help you and that is to start a Kickstarter fund. You can also ask for sponsorships especially if your book caters to an advocacy.
Print and market. If you already have the funds, then you’re completely ready to print the fruit of your labor. Choose a decent printing press. You do not want to ruin the contents of your book. After printing, market the books by approaching your local bookstores. Offer free book readings and ask your friends to also market your book. You can also consider approaching pre-schools and elementary schools.
Aside from self-publishing, there’s another one option for you. You can venture into traditional publishing which will require you to hire an agent and submit your work to publishers. This may take a long time since publishers may not immediately approve your book.
Whatever option you choose, it all boils down to your passion and determination.
