Chapter 669 261: Ambush
Chapter 669 261: Ambush
Migratory Bird Island, the sun has already descended below the horizon, and the night envelops everything.Cantona stands under the lighthouse at the harbor; the fishing town's pier has quieted down. Apart from the tavern at the pier, only the lighthouse remains aglow. Beside him are the grand duke Baron's guards; they had planned on patrolling but are now gambling and drinking here.
At this moment, Cantona and Lunalay hold the identity of high-level adventure guards, hired with great expense by the grand duke Baron. The price is that Lunalay spends half of her nights in the grand duke Baron's room, occasionally sneaking into Storm Leader Tarek's room for a while.
Openly, she is now the guard and lover of the grand duke Baron, and Tarek greatly enjoys the forbidden thrill of secret trysts. Cantona doesn't feel much about his ex-girlfriend's current promiscuity; he merely harbors a bit of wicked pleasure in using her a few times before nightfall, then sends her to serve the grand duke Baron.
Meanwhile, Lunalay is a master at manipulating people's hearts, or rather, it's an inherent ability bestowed by her path. The seductive woman's physique is quite unique, unless she intentionally provokes Cantona like last time, outsiders can hardly detect it, even those stronger than her. She presents a different persona to the public, tailored to her target.
She maintains gendered relationships with both the grand duke Baron and Tarek, subtly managing the balance between the two. However, on a mental level, she always holds the initiative. After each pleasure, she always finds a way to reject their further exclusive desires or continuous pursuit.
Tarek and the grand duke Baron's desires are firmly grasped in Lunalay's hand. She meticulously regulates the men's emotions and progress, extracting the necessary nutrients from them for her path. During this time, her eyes and brows radiate the glow of someone who has absorbed enough nutrients.
Migratory Bird Island is not large. Viewed from above, the island's shape resembles the head of a migratory bird. However, over seventy percent of the island is either barren rocky terrain or bird-filled swampy wetlands. This is also a fixed resting hub for migratory birds along their route.
In the beak area is the island's only small town, Bird Beak Town, nominally belonging to Five Claw Island, but in reality, it's a no-man's land. Pirates and sea merchants come here to replenish freshwater and fruits, a business monopolized by the mayor's family. Nowadays, this small fishing town is fully controlled by the grand duke Baron.
For this hunt of the Black Raven ghost ship, Cantona chose the Death Church. The Nether God's influence in the Netherworld Sea is minor, plagued with concerns, unlike the Death Church. As long as the target is clear, they are truly willing to go all out.
The Death Church reacted swiftly; the news of six Death God Deacons arriving at Migratory Bird Island reached his hand a few days ago. Just last night, the Messenger of Death sent word, based on the intelligence provided by Lunalay. They have locked onto the Black Raven's activity range and proposed a plan to raid it.
Though the Black Raven is a ghost ship, half of its crew are human subordinates of the grand duke Baron. They still require regular food, and certain curse components and mediums that keep the ghost ship traversing through the Spirit Realm need to be replenished at port.
The ghost ship itself will never dock, but every two days, a small shuttle boat dependent on it sneaks in, disguised as a common fishing boat at night. Every time, it takes women onboard, apparently defying the grand duke's orders. However, seeing the nearby port yet unable to disembark for fun is intolerable for human sailors confined to the ship for years.
Tonight, the ghost ship's shuttle boat will return the women taken last time, simultaneously recruiting new ones, making it the best time for action.
The salty sea breeze smattered with the scent of rust blows in, hiding a faint killing intent. The Death God Deacons have arrived.
It was a one-sided massacre; the guards playing cards had almost no pain. Six Death God Deacons effortlessly took their lives. Cantona watched as his fallen comrades, whose throats were simply slit before plunging into eternal sleep. This is the power of the Death God Deacons; if unaware of their assassination, it means instant death. Even the meager souls are sacrificed to the Death God, like filling the gaps between teeth.
The bodies were pushed into the sea; the surging tide rising like a beast's tongue swallowed all traces in the blink of an eye.
Cantona felt a chill, his hair standing on end as six Death God Deacons stood beside him, vaguely surrounding him. Lunalay's figure ghosted up behind the Deacons; clearly, they'd secretly bypassed Cantona for contact.
"Is everything ready for the seals?" Lunalay asked the Deacons.
"Soul-locking Chains, Ash Hammer, Undead Bell," one Deacon coldly explained the sealing items they brought.
The Soul-locking Chains anchor the ghost ship; the Ash Hammer can shake the ghost ship out of its Spirit Realm ghostly state; the Undead Bell can interfere with Spirit Realm communication methods, giving them ample time to find the Wish Crystal onboard. The Church of Death spared no expense.
"Good, now just wait for the Black Raven's supply ship to dock."
Time ticked away.
Cantona and the Deacons took turns using Ashen Eye to scan the sea surface, a magic under the Death God's belief system. Without belief in the Death God, it cannot be used. When Cantona successfully utilized Ashen Eye, the Deacons exchanged a glance, their coldness slightly tempered.
Cantona furtively cursed in his heart.
Finally, a small boat appeared on the horizon, following the current toward the dock. As it closed in, with the naked eye, both the sailors and scantily-clad women onboard became visible. These women were marked by fatigue yet carefully handled the sailors' coarse hands.
The small boat docked, Cantona's pupils dilated, he gestured behind him, prompting the Death God Deacons to start moving in the shadows.
It was Cantona's first time observing the Death God Deacons silently approach their targets. A shroud of gray death wrapped around them, allowing them to blend perfectly into the night, almost invisible.
Everything should be silent until the sky suddenly lit up!
"What's going on, why is the Black Raven firing flares?"
"An enemy attack? Where?"
The newly landed sailors looked towards the sea; five continuous flares exploded into bright light, illuminating the sea and dock as if daytime. Not far off the coast, a ghostly green warship seemed especially eerie.
Almost successful, the Death God Deacons were exposed by the light, their shroud of death faded under the flare's brightness. The sailors couldn't react in time, but the women who had just jumped ashore noticed the Deacons. Instinctively, they wanted to scream, but the Deacons quickly corrected this mistake. Several of them waved their hands, the Death God's Hidden Power kept the unfortunate women silent, only the sound of falls echoed, then the sailors, barely having drawn weapons, had their throats slit by the Deacons turned into ghostly light.
Cantona's gaze tightened, realizing the unexpected environmental change might render the dreadful assassination abilities of the Death God Deacons ineffective. Looking out to sea again, the Black Raven ghost ship hovered alone, all quiet except for more rising flares.
"What's going on? Did the Black Raven know we were coming?" Lunalay asked, walking over with a face full of seriousness.
Cantona shook his head, "It's not aimed at us, it's underwater."
Underwater? Lunalay moved slightly, just about to speak when suddenly, a towering wave erupted from the distant sea! The entire area seemed to boil, dozens of gigantic water columns soared up, amid the flying white spray, countless bizarre shapes burst forth. Despite the distance, the deafening roars reached the dock.
"It's the Sea Siren Queen's army of sea monsters!" Lunalay murmured, "Sea monsters have an eye on Barton's ghost ship... How did they know Barton hid the Wish Crystal onboard!"
Cantona turned to glance at Lunalay, thoughts racing, "Perhaps Barton isn't as foolish as you think; this secret is merely bait, to see who'll bite."
On the sea, the Black Raven, initially in a Spirit Realm state, abruptly revealed its true form amidst distorted ripples. Evidently struck by a powerful sealing object from afar, ghostly green flames burned across its hull, forced out of its spectral state. Like a wounded beast dragged into the physical world.
