Chapter 528 - 82: The Boss and the Secretary
Chapter 528 - 82: The Boss and the Secretary
The person who brought bad luck has left, and the atmosphere has actually gotten better. There were barbecues and beers, and it couldn’t be more lively.
Pei Ji’an and Qu Fulan didn’t work the entire time; as the people involved, they had to go out and enjoy themselves with everyone.
But whenever someone wanted to toast Qu Fulan, Pei Ji’an would block it and drink on her behalf. The crowd around them would cheer, and even with Qu Fulan’s thick skin, she couldn’t help but blush.
There were quite a few village women eating barbecue. Most of them were quietly helping with the grilling; there was too much meat and they couldn’t finish it all. Qu Fulan left Pei Ji’an’s side and went over to help with the barbecue.
But unexpectedly, the women weren’t easy to deal with either, asking about her and her boyfriend’s love story.
Qu Fulan didn’t like sharing her feelings with others, but since they asked, she had to give some perfunctory responses.
In the end, it was Mrs. Qu who called her in to help, allowing her to successfully escape.
As the head of the family, Mrs. Qu couldn’t be idle, unlike everyone else. There were always various things needing her attention. For tasks with a large volume, she would get help; for smaller ones, she’d do them herself.
At the moment, she needed to make some extra dumplings. Normally, she could do it alone, but seeing her daughter struggling with social obligations, she offered her a way out.
Qu Fulan breathed a sigh of relief. The questions from everyone were too sharp; if she stayed any longer, she wouldn’t be able to handle it and would rather go back to drinking.
"Aren’t there dumplings already? Why make more?" she asked while casually wrapping one.
"The villagers have worked hard today to help. We’ll give each of them some to take back later. They aren’t anything expensive but come from the heart."
Qu Fulan nodded and fell silent, the sounds of merriment from outside the courtyard never ceasing to reach her ears.
Outside were the men drinking and playing dice, while the women chatted about various gossip—both not to be trifled with.
Suddenly, there came an exclamation from outside, a sound unlike the joyful cheers before, but one of being startled.
Then someone shouted, "Oh no, someone has fainted!"
Both Mrs. Qu and Qu Fulan froze, then Qu Fulan quickly got up and ran out. Someone told her, "Little Qu, your boyfriend has fainted!"
Qu Fulan staggered, almost going weak in the knees.
Seeing her come out, the people gathered there looked at her, then automatically made way for her.
Through the path, she saw someone lying sideways on the ground. Though she couldn’t see clearly, the color of the clothes and the posture made it obvious—who else could it be but Pei Ji’an?
What happened to him?
Why would he faint?
At this moment, Qu Fulan couldn’t see anyone else, and she walked over there in a daze.
"Jian?" She hadn’t reached him yet but already started calling his name, her voice trembling a bit. When she got in front of him, she hadn’t even squatted down to check.
The person who had fainted suddenly turned around and got up, holding something in his hand, and got down on one knee toward her.
This unexpected turn of events left Qu Fulan covering her mouth, stunned, and the surrounding people were momentarily silent as well.
Immediately after, there was a louder uproar than any that had come before, the sounds surging like waves and lingering.
In this instant, Qu Fulan only felt her mind went blank, unable to fathom what was happening. By the time she realized she was about to turn and run, Young Master Yang blocked her path.
As if joking around, since it was his idea along with another’s, how could they let the person involved leave?
Qu Fulan looked back; he was still kneeling there.
Below was a cushion already laid out to avoid getting his suit dirty, a clear sign of preparation.
People around them had already started joining in the uproar.
"Say yes!"
"Say yes!"
"Say yes!"
...
Not knowing who pushed her from behind, Qu Fulan found herself back in front of him once again.
He was still holding up the ring, with a diamond as dazzling as a pigeon egg in the sunlight.
Young Master Yang brought the prepared bouquet of flowers over and thrust them into Qu Fulan’s hands. Holding the flowers to her chest, she seemed to find some solace, then extended her hand.
Pei Ji’an put the ring on her finger, then kissed the back of her hand before standing up to hug her.
Meanwhile, Zhou Shaoyang and others fired the pre-prepared colored streamers into the sky, and flower petals fell around the newly engaged couple.
The cheers of the surrounding people grew even louder, accompanied by applause.
Rural people rarely see such romance; rich people really know how to have fun, and the Qu family’s daughter is indeed impressive.
Qu Fulan buried her face in his chest, feeling the surrounding excitement, half-shy, half-delighted, with a sense of having been tricked.
A proposal is a proposal, but how could they use fainting to deceive her? She was almost so convinced she was about to cry.
With her face still buried in his chest, after the joy came an awkwardness about not knowing how to handle the situation with so many people watching...
To exacerbate matters, the onlookers weren’t tired of the spectacle and someone started to call out "Kiss her!"
Then came a chorus of "Kiss her!"
Qu Fulan was too shy to look up, but Pei Ji’an whispered in her ear, "Kiss her?"
She didn’t expect him to join in, leaving her shocked, and then her chin was lifted, bringing the handsome face so close... she felt her breath catch.
In the next second, her lips softened...
When they returned to the room, the warmth on Qu Fulan’s face hadn’t subsided.
The courtyard outside remained lively, but she didn’t dare to go out again, hiding her face in her cup.
"I can’t face anyone now."
Pei Ji’an watched her bury her head like an ostrich, worried she might suffocate, turned her over, looking down at her, "What’s there not to face? Who doesn’t propose this way?"
The posture left Qu Fulan feeling insecure and shy, averting her gaze, "Why didn’t you warn me beforehand? I was caught unprepared."
"If I said something, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it?"
Qu Fulan couldn’t help pouting.
If she could choose beforehand, she certainly wouldn’t have it so grand—just the two of them would be enough. But now that it happened this way... she couldn’t say it was bad, because the feeling was indeed unexpected and touching, albeit with an added awkwardness due to being watched by everyone.
"Cough, okay, you can go out now and don’t keep friends and family waiting." Qu Fulan urged him.
"No rush," he said.
With that, he leaned in...
A rush of heat flooded into her mouth and nose.
Outside the window came the din from the courtyard, gossip, and the sounds of drinking games.
Qu Fulan clutched the blanket, her heart nearly jumping out from nervousness and excitement.
Fortunately, he didn’t linger too long; releasing her, he ruffled her hair and then stepped outside.
"Wait—" she suddenly called out.
"What?" he turned back.
"Don’t drink too much," she said, hiding her face under the blanket.
The man chuckled softly, said he knew, and went out.
Finally alone, Qu Fulan couldn’t help but roll around on the bed a few times, like a mudfish.
"He proposed to me." Unable to hold it in, she had to share her joy with someone.
Her best friend first sent a string of screams, then asked for details.
"Where was it? Is there a video? Send it to me! So curious about how President Pei proposed!"
After sending a couple of replies, Qu Fulan placed her phone over her heart, unable to stop the smile spreading across her lips.
Finally, overwhelmed with joy, she buried her face back into the cup again.
Just too happy.
