Chapter 529 - 83: The Boss and the Secretary
Chapter 529 - 83: The Boss and the Secretary
In the end, Pei Ji’an was still a bit drunk. After all, it was an engagement occasion, and as the would-be groom, it was impossible for him not to drink. Zhou Shaoyang had helped him block quite a bit of alcohol, making him even more drunk.
That night, there weren’t enough rooms at home. Originally, the Qu Family had three rooms: one for Qu Fulan, one for Mrs. Qu, and one more where Pei Ji’an slept.
Now, Zhou Shaoyang was sleeping in it, and Pei Ji’an had nowhere to sleep.
Besides, the friends and relatives who came with Pei Ji’an also didn’t have a place to sleep, so they were scattered around the village, staying in other people’s homes. Some who hadn’t drunk drove to the town to stay in hotels.
Naturally, Pei Ji’an slept in Qu Fulan’s room, while Qu Fulan was originally supposed to sleep with her mom. Mrs. Qu asked her to take care of Pei Ji’an, saying that someone who had been drinking needed someone to look after them.
Zhou Shaoyang was even more drunk, so Mrs. Qu asked a young man from the village who hadn’t drunk to watch over them in case anything happened.
Even though they had drunk sobering soup, it didn’t necessarily take effect right away.
Pei Ji’an’s recovery was quite quick, and while Zhou Shaoyang was still fast asleep, Pei Ji’an was already feeling much better, just with a slight headache.
When Qu Fulan was massaging his temples, she couldn’t help but remark, "You guys drank a little too much."
But Pei Ji’an said, "Don’t worry, Zhou Shaoyang’s drinking capacity was trained from a young age. The drinking at social events is even more exaggerated than this."
"And what about you, how’s your drinking capacity compared to theirs?"
"Not as good."
With social gatherings and drinking sessions, people often assess who they can make drink more. With Pei Ji’an’s background, basically, no one dared to force alcohol on him. Zhou Shaoyang liked to drink and play drinking games.
"After we get married, let’s have them serve as the bartenders," Pei Ji’an said.
Qu Fulan punched him lightly and questioned why he was talking about something so far ahead when focusing on tonight’s event.
"Since you’re fine now, I’m going back to sleep," Qu Fulan said as she was about to leave, but Pei Ji’an pulled her into his arms, "Aren’t we already engaged?"
No more words were necessary, as what followed was intuitive and beyond verbal expression.
Young couples being alone can easily lead to incidents, especially when someone has consumed alcohol, which might cause impulsive behavior afterward...
Qu Fulan felt a psychological barrier, not out of rejection, but because it felt improper at her own home, like doing something behind the adults’ backs. Feeling this way, how could she enjoy the moment?
"No way..." she rejected, "Let’s wait until we’re back in G City..."
Pei Ji’an also thought the environment was unsuitable and inhibiting, worried they might make a noise that others could hear.
Moreover, her home didn’t have air conditioning, and it wasn’t convenient in the winter.
In the end, Qu Fulan fell asleep first, while Pei Ji’an was still trying to calm some restlessness. Men are generally more easily aroused than women and need some time to calm down.
The next day, after breakfast, Pei Ji’an and others were leaving, although the original plan didn’t include Qu Fulan. It was Mrs. Qu who asked Qu Fulan to go back to G City first.
"Xiao Ji has come to our house twice, and he’s coming again for the New Year. You should visit his home to meet his elders. I’ll stay until the fifteenth."
"But you alone..." Qu Fulan felt uneasy.
"There’s always the neighbors around. If anything happens, I can just ask them for help. You should return and resume work. Staying home a few extra days is better for my health. If you stay, it just adds pressure on me."
Mrs. Qu made sense. If she could choose, she preferred to stay in the village longer over the New Year to recuperate physically and mentally. If her daughter stayed, she’d have to leave together then.
Mrs. Qu then called Pei Ji’an over, gave him some thoughtful advice, and prepared some things for her daughter to take to the Pei Family.
So, in the end, Qu Fulan went back to G City with Pei Ji’an. They stopped for a break and ate something along the way, reaching the Pei Family by nightfall.
Mr. Pei was naturally delighted to see them return. However, the rest of the Pei Family had a lukewarm reaction to Qu Fulan’s arrival, which she didn’t mind much.
In the future, when she got married, she wouldn’t be living with these relatives. They weren’t like her employers, so she didn’t need to live life according to their moods.
Most of the people were kind, or at least outwardly friendly.
The friendliest was naturally Mr. Pei, who, having lived to such an age, understood everything and was easy-going toward people and matters.
At the family dinner, Qu Fulan’s etiquette in all aspects was impeccable, thanks to the effort she put into learning back then, which now paid off effortlessly.
Only when talking with some relatives about hobbies and daily activities did Qu Fulan understand why Pei Ji’an had insisted she learn those social customs back then.
Because in this circle, such topics were what everyone discussed, and without learning them, one couldn’t join the conversation.
"Will I still have to learn those tedious etiquettes in the future?"
Back in the room, Qu Fulan couldn’t help but ask. If he said yes, she might think about backing out.
Pei Ji’an glanced at her, "It’s up to you. Learn if you want, don’t learn if you don’t want to."
With that question asked, of course, she didn’t want to learn. They were mere shows for others to see, and she still had work to do to earn money. How would she have that much time?
"Then why did you force me to learn so much in the past?" Back then, she felt drained, learning one thing after another endlessly; it was simply an inhuman way of living.
With heating in the room, Pei Ji’an had already taken off his coat, wearing a white shirt, he poured himself a glass of red wine, "That was for your own good."
He had her learn those customs for long-term considerations. Being born into a family like this was his destiny. The two of them being together meant she would undoubtedly interact with many people of various backgrounds; learning in advance was better than cramming at the last minute.
For example, today, she dealt with those relatives directly, whereas if she hadn’t learned, she wouldn’t have managed tonight with such ease.
Knowing she wouldn’t have to continue learning in the future, Qu Fulan felt half-relieved. With that relief, her view widened.
"Did you want me to learn back then with the intention of marrying me?" she asked.
"What else?"
Qu Fulan didn’t say anything, but her heart was filled with sweetness.
In fact, during their initial relationship, he hinted at wanting to marry her, but she wasn’t as happy then as she felt now. Initially, she only felt tired and weary, since his personality was too domineering at the time. However, since getting back together, he had changed a lot.
When Qu Fulan was about to take a shower and was worrying about not having brought a change of clothes, he took her to see the walk-in closet, and she was shocked.
An entire walk-in closet filled with her clothes, from intimate apparel to various outerwear, everything was there.
"When did you prepare all this?"
He mentioned a date.
Qu Fulan was speechless; it was shortly after they started dating.
That somewhat absurd blind date inexplicably led to a relationship, while she was still considering the possibility of breaking up anytime, but he was already making these preparations.
She realized this man was truly a doer, working silently behind the scenes without ever boasting about it.
