Chapter 6 : Fake ID
Chapter 6 : Fake ID
Fake IDThe fantasies in her mind grew increasingly vivid, and Gu Yanxi's eyes became ever more dazed.
Just as she was about to completely lose herself in that enchanting world, a cool, clear female voice sounded by her ear, instantly pulling her thoughts back to reality.
"... What's wrong with you?"
Cecilia asked in confusion.
Gu Yanxi quickly averted her gaze from the silver-haired girl's lips, shook her head, and stammered, "N-no, it's nothing. Hurry and eat, after you finish, we need to wash up and then go to bed."
"Oh..."
Cecilia didn't know why Gu Yanxi had just spaced out, but since girls' thoughts were inherently hard to guess, she simply nodded and resumed tackling the food in front of her.
It had to be said, the appetite of this body was really limited. Even though she had been hungry the whole day, after just a few slices of bread and a carton of yogurt, a strong sense of fullness arose in her stomach. She could only wave her hand at Gu Yanxi, signaling that she really couldn't eat any more.
"Then why don't you go wash up now?"
Gu Yanxi asked, taking the plate off the blanket.
"Mm."
"But you should wait a moment. There should still be an unused toothbrush at home, but as for towels, there's only the one I've used. If you don't mind, you can just use it, or I can go to your place and fetch one now?"
Gu Yanxi asked again.
There was no way Cecilia would possibly mind using Gu Yanxi's towel, so she decisively shook her head.
It was nearly midnight now, and making Gu Yanxi run back and forth really wasn't very considerate.
Although, truthfully, it was mainly because she wanted to use Gu Yanxi's towel.
"There's no pajamas either. I'll see if I can find the ones I wore in middle school; Mom surely hasn't thrown them away yet. You can manage for tonight and we'll buy new ones tomorrow. You're a little shorter than me, so the size should be close enough."
Gu Yanxi was a full 167 centimeters tall, which counted as pretty tall among girls, while Cecilia was only about 155 centimeters. So, letting her wear Gu Yanxi's middle school pajamas was probably no problem at all.
However, just as Gu Yanxi was about to start rummaging for pajamas, a soft 'thud' suddenly came from the right-side window of the room.
It sounded as if something had just hit the glass.
At first, Gu Yanxi jumped at the noise, but she quickly regained her composure and walked toward the window as if nothing had happened:
"Probably just a bird. You stay there and don't move, I'll go take a look."
Step by step, Gu Yanxi walked to the window, reached out, and gently lifted the curtain. It was already midnight, and all the apartment complex lights had been turned off; outside was pitch black and nothing could be seen.
After hesitating for a moment, Gu Yanxi opened half of the window. The cool night breeze immediately blew into the room.
And, drifting in with it, was a white envelope, which gently landed on the floor inside the room.
"What's that?"
While Gu Yanxi bent over to pick up the envelope, Cecilia turned her head and looked out the window.
Although it was dark, with her body's natural night vision she still clearly saw a small shadow flapping its wings and soaring off into the night sky.
Cecilia was not unfamiliar with such flight; in fact, she had a pet in the game that flew just like this.
If she wasn't mistaken, that should be a bat.
A bat smacking into the window... and then thinking of the envelope that just drifted in, Cecilia let out a faint sigh.
She knew the envelope must contain the proof of identity Aesther had promised her earlier.
She hadn't expected her to deliver it in such a way...
If not for the VR helmet being too big, would Aesther have sent a bat to deliver that too?
"Close the window. That envelope is for me,"
Cecilia said softly.
Gu Yanxi gave a quiet "mm" and didn't ask anything else. She dutifully picked up the envelope, closed the window, and walked to the bedside, handing the envelope to Cecilia.
The envelope was just ordinary brown paper, the kind you could buy several of at a convenience store for a buck, but the wax seal at the flap looked quite elegant—very much in keeping with that woman's usual style.
Taking a deep breath, Cecilia opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded letter, and from the feel of it, there seemed to be a hard card tucked inside as well.
Not in a rush to pull out the card, she first unfolded the letter.
It was a familiar handwriting, written in Chinese with a goose-quill pen.
[To my dearest Cecilia:]
[I am so glad you sought my help. Even in my cold-heartedness, you have given me some comfort. I am truly honored.]
[Today, I ran everywhere, visiting dozens of renowned master artisans in a row. With my gentle and agreeable persuasion, I have not failed you—they have finally completed the task you entrusted to me.]
[This little card was hard to obtain, truly priceless. It bears a cognition-obscuring magic, and counts as a powerful magic tool. It should allow you to traverse that world unimpeded; please use it with care.]
[With love, always yours, aesther]
Looking at the ceremonial letter in her hands, Cecilia let out a helpless sigh and tore it into pieces, stuffing them into the empty yogurt box beside her.
"Miss Aesther, this is a law-based society now. Falsifying citizenship documents can get you jailed."
Despite what she said, she still honestly took out the little card from the envelope.
Just as she had guessed, the envelope contained an ID card so genuine it could almost pass for a real one.
The birthdate was exactly the same as Chen Zixuan's—born in 2004, soon to be eighteen.
As for the photo, it was almost identical to her current appearance: delicate and beautiful, though the hair was black and not slightly wavy like her current hair, and as smooth as melted chocolate.
To be fair, this black-haired version of Cecilia was quite pretty too. Although it lacked the haughty, icy aura of silver hair, it felt more mysterious and reserved—perhaps the so-called Eastern charm.
In this regard, aesther had really put effort in; she'd clearly come to understand the common sense of life in this world.
After all, it was extremely rare for someone in this country to be born with silver hair; beyond albinism, you could hardly find one in real life.
With this ID card, if someone ever questioned her hair color, she could convincingly explain it away as hair dye.
However, unlike a normal ID card, the name field on this one was completely blank, with not a single character written.
So... am I supposed to name myself?
Her pretty brows furrowed in hesitation. Though she was skilled at fighting and killing, she'd never had to name herself before.
What should she do?
