Chapter 1039: The Children Are Missing
Chapter 1039: The Children Are Missing
Yun Jiao smiled, "This is truly good news; at last there’s a glimmer of hope, not an endless wait."She suddenly looked forlorn, "Poor Qi Er, asking every year if his father can come home."
"If his father can’t come home, can he go to the south疆?"
Jiang Youzhi patted her head, "There’s no other way; some sacrifices are always necessary."
Yun Jiao sighed, "I just hope it happens sooner; I’m afraid Qi Er can’t wait any longer."
The next day, Qi Er and You Er returned home, and after dinner, Qi Er suddenly asked Yun Jiao, "Aunt Gu, is my father gone?"
Yun Jiao was startled, "What nonsense are you talking, child? Your father is alive and well; didn’t he just send you a letter the other day?"
Qi Er shook his head, "Letters can be written on behalf of someone else. Even if the handwriting matches, it can be forged."
"I’m fifteen now, no longer a child. I can go to the south疆 myself; even if you are worried, you can arrange someone to escort me. Why won’t you let me go?"
"What’s really up with my father? Speak the truth; I can handle it."
Yun Jiao didn’t know what to say and looked at Jiang Youzhi.
Jiang Youzhi said in a deep voice, "Don’t overthink it. Your father is indeed alive; Uncle Jiang tells you the truth: five years, at most another five years, and you’ll definitely see your father."
Qi Er looked at Jiang Youzhi seriously.
He was almost as tall as Jiang Youzhi now. He could see that when his father was mentioned, there was no trace of sadness in Uncle Jiang and Aunt Gu’s eyes, indicating that his father was truly not dead.
Knowing this, he felt relieved.
Qi Er nodded and strode out.
You Er glanced at his parents, "Is Uncle Lin really in the south疆? What exactly are you hiding?"
Jiang Youzhi coughed lightly, "Matters of the court are not for children to worry about."
You Er looked at his father deeply, said nothing, and withdrew.
Early the next morning, Qi Er and You Er rode out with their trusted aides, and Yun Jiao didn’t mind. The children were grown up, and skilled in martial arts; they bullies others, not the other way around.
Yun Jiao went as usual to Renxin Hall.
In the afternoon, Housekeeper Wang sent someone to report that the two young masters had not returned home, unsure if they went straight to the military camp.
Yun Jiao was busy, "How would I know? They probably went back."
The Duke hadn’t returned this time; it had happened before too, with the children resting at home for a day and then going to the camp the next day.
Back home, Yun Jiao didn’t give it much thought, the next day going as usual to Renxin Hall.
Who knew, near noon, Housekeeper Wang himself dashed into Renxin Hall, sweating, and bent over, "Reporting, madam, the Duke just sent someone, asking why the young masters didn’t go to the camp?"
"What?" The pen Yun Jiao held dropped.
She composed herself, "Wait a moment; let me finish this prescription, and we’ll talk."
She took a few deep breaths, then slowly finished writing the prescription, before going to the backyard with Housekeeper Wang, "What’s going on here?"
Housekeeper Wang was anxious, "The Duke sent a personal soldier to ask why he hadn’t seen the young masters at the camp."
"Last night, he thought something might have held them up at home; in the morning he calculated the time, but when they hadn’t arrived on time, he found it odd."
"They just wouldn’t show up, so he sent his personal soldiers back to the house to ask if something’s happening at home."
