Chapter 1056: Trapped Like Turtles in a Jar
Chapter 1056: Trapped Like Turtles in a Jar
The road at the canyon mouth was still wide, but after half a li it narrowed until it was only a little wider than a single carriage. The horses were moving very slowly. The mountain path twisted and turned; if they went too fast, they’d inevitably scrape against rocks and branches on either side.
The horse team had just entered the canyon when a whistle suddenly sounded from the mountains.
Qi Er and You Er both felt a chill in their hearts; they knew it had to be bandits passing along a signal.
Just then the armed escort following them raised his voice and called, "Heroes of Niu Tou Mountain, this is a job taken by the Fuwei Escort Agency. Please, sirs, be so kind as to let us pass."
A voice came from the mountain. "You people can go, but I’ve taken a liking to those two horses. Leave them behind!"
Qi Er and You Er exchanged a glance and kept silent.
The escort forced a smile and said, "May I ask which hero is speaking? I’m Da Beng of the escort agency, my master is—"
"Who cares who your master is? You deaf or something? Leave the horses, the people can go!" The voice from the mountain came from no telling where, echoing faintly back and forth in the gorge.
Qi Er raised his voice and said, "Leaving the horses is impossible. I still have some Silver here—please, heroes, have some tea on us."
As he spoke, Qi Er shot a look at Ma Fei. Ma Fei reached into his clothes, pulled out a money pouch, and casually tossed it toward the mountainside, where it caught on a branch.
The few of them rode on.
The voice sounded again. "What, is my word as Second Master of Niu Tou Mountain no good anymore these days?"
"I said the horses stay. Are you all deaf?"
The escort was horrified. "Young masters, perhaps you should just leave the horses. This Second Master is said to have quite a temper."
Qi Er said coldly, "There’s no way we’re leaving the horses. We’re going."
He gave a light tap to his mount’s belly, and the fine steed under him quickened its pace.
Right then, one sharp whistle after another rang out, as if passing on some signal.
The escort’s face changed drastically. "This is bad—they’re calling in more men!"
Qi Er shouted, "Go!"
The escort was on the verge of tears.
The canyon stretched for several li; how could they get through it so easily!
You Er and Qi Er heard noises all along both slopes, but paid them no mind and just urged their horses forward.
But the path was too narrow; they simply couldn’t go fast.
Up ahead the road seemed to widen; they should be nearing the end of the gorge. Ma Fei, riding in front, was overjoyed and was just about to call for everyone to speed up when he saw a length of log as thick as a water jar lying across the road ahead.
Ma Fei shouted in alarm, "There’s a rolling log blocking the road up ahead!"
Everyone hurriedly yanked their reins, and the line came to an abrupt halt.
You Er looked up at the slopes on both sides. No one knew how many bandits were hidden in these hills.
At this moment, they couldn’t advance and could not retreat.
A saying popped into his head: "catching a softshell turtle in a jar."
Without needing to be told, everyone dismounted and gathered around Qi Er and You Er.
Only the escort stared around in terror.
In no time, it was as if a wind had risen.
The trees and wild grass on the slopes all began to move, and in an instant, countless heads popped out.
Someone chuckled. "Well now, these youngsters are pretty good-looking. How about we haul them all up the mountain?"
Just then You Er suddenly called out loudly, "Heroes, I have something to say."
Someone laughed. "What does the little young master want to say?"
"You want to beg us to spare your life, is that it?"
You Er said solemnly, "We can’t give you these two horses. If you really insist on taking them, it will bring destruction down on Niu Tou Mountain."
The men on the slopes weren’t in any rush to make a move; they listened with great patience, since these few clearly had no path to heaven and no door to earth.
The Second Master’s voice from before rang out again. "And why is that?"
