Village Head Gu was eating lunch when she heard Chen Mi’s scream. She almost choked on the bite of rice that she had just taken.
"Cough!"
"Are you alright, wife?" Old Master Gu asked Village Head Gu while her concubines also looked at Village Head Gu worriedly. However as the lord of the house was speaking, they dared not to say anything.
"I am fine," Village Head Gu answered as she wiped her lips on the back of her hand. She turned to look at Eldest Gu and said, "Go and bring Master Chen inside. It looks like there is something wrong."
Eldest Gu nodded as she stood up from her chair and went to look outside.
"Brother Chen, what’s the matter?" Eldest Gu asked when she saw that the expression on Chen Mi’s face was not right. His complexion was rather pale as well.
Just by looking at Chen Mi’s current condition, Eldest Gu could sense that something was up.
Chen Mi was panting as he had come running out of the house, first thing after learning that there was going to be a locust attack tomorrow.
"Elder Sister Gu, where is Village Head Gu?" Chen Mi wanted to tell everything to Village Head Gu as he was worried that Elder Sister Gu might end up leaving something out.
If she did not relay the message with the same panic that he felt, Chen Mi was worried that the rice grown in their village would be ruined by the locusts.
"I am here," Village Head Gu replied as she stepped outside, "I was eating lunch which is why I got delayed. Forgive me for my tardiness."
Only then did Chen Mi realise that the entire village had eaten lunch at this hour.
"Village Head Gu, I... I am sorry. I was in a hurry and completely forgot that you might be having lunch at this time," Chen Mi apologized with a bow.
"Clearly," muttered Old Master Gu under his breath as he did not like Chen Mi disrupting the meal of his wife who had worked hard the entire day.
However, as soon as finished speaking, Village Head Gu turned and glared at him causing Old Master Gu to lower his head with a terrified look on his face.
He completely forgot the current status of Yu Dong in his wife’s eyes including the admiration that she had for Yu Dong.
As soon as Village Head Gu gave out the orders, Elder Sister Gu rushed to the large platform under the banyan tree where the bronze gong was placed.
Once she arrived at the platform, she rang the gong three times which was a sign of emergency.
"What’s going on? Why are you ringing the bell, Elder Sister Gu?"
"It is supposed to be our lunchtime."
"Did something happen again?"
"Silence!" Elder Sister Gu banged her fist on the gong while looking down at the villagers. "Madam Yu just sent word to my mother, that there is going to be a locust attack tomorrow morning. Go and harvest the rice that is growing in your fields or else nothing will be left!"
"Locusts? The locusts are going to attack our village?"
"I am not done speaking yet!" Elder Sister Gu spoke loudly. "Once you are done go and put the commercial purpose rice along with your family rice in the granary. Don’t try to collect the rice and take it back home, it will only waste time. Just write your name on the sack covering your rice."
"Don’t think of threshing it today, just harvest the stalks!"
With these orders alone anyone could see how dangerous the matter was!
