Chapter 737 - 648: After the Curtain Falls
Chapter 737 - 648: After the Curtain Falls
The movie ended, the lights came on, no one rose to pay their respects, looking around, the silhouettes of those coming and going had all vanished, the seats of the entire theater lay in disarray, filled with weathered skeletons, covered in spider webs, and insects crawling out from the eye sockets.
Out of Chichu Chun’s perverse sense of humor, some of the skeletons’ hands were even joined together, leaning on each other.
"The movie is only two hours, yet it feels like so much longer, my back is sore from sitting."
Chichu Chun stood up and stretched lazily, for the atmosphere, she had gone to great lengths to find so many skeletons in this desolate city; if the commander knew she was doing this during the mission, she’d be scolded to death.
Xu Xiaoyou sat in the seat, staring at the screen, and only after a long time did she get up and pat the dust off her clothes.
"So, how was it? The early Silver Era films?"
"9.5 out of 10," Xu Xiaoyou gave a fair evaluation.
Many images flashed before her eyes, and at last, she closed her eyes and shook her head.
"Where do you want to go next?"
"Going back just like that is too boring," Chichu Chun said, "It feels like something’s missing."
"Well, since you put it that way." Chichu Chun placed her index finger in front of her lips, "I do have a place in mind."
"Come with me."
She took Xu Xiaoyou’s hand.
The scene shifted, on an endless plain, two young girls strolled on a hillside, a purple full moon slowly rose into the sky, from this vantage point, the craters on the moon were clearly visible, scattered across its surface.
Staring too long gives one the illusion that the moon is approaching, as if at any moment, a hundred-meter-high tsunami from afar would engulf this place.
Chichu Chun walked alone ahead, her thin silhouette set against the half-empty moon. The wind pressed the weeds beneath the girl flat against the ground, and also lifted the strands of her hair by the temple, as she suddenly turned around.
"Didn’t you ask me if I wanted to leave everything behind and take off to the ends of the earth with you?"
"What if I say yes, what would you do?"
Xu Xiaoyou smiled: "Then your idea is very naive, I would take you back to Thistle Xuedong, and relay your answer to her as it is."
"I knew it!" Chichu Chun flashed her canine tooth, "Glad I didn’t fall for your You spirit."
"Some responsibilities can’t be shirked, some missions can’t be escaped, I’m not that naive."
"Being reckless would just get more people involved."
"Now, I give you my answer seriously."
"I don’t want to run to the ends of the earth, I want to take up responsibility, whether that responsibility is imposed on me by Heaven or not, I don’t care!"
"A promise made must be kept, I said I would bring more people home before the autumn leaves fall, I will do it even if it means climbing mountains of swords or crossing seas of flame."
"Instead of always pondering why, it’s better to solve the troubles first, free from burdens."
"If the matter hasn’t been resolved, yet all you think about is shifting responsibilities, pondering why it has to be you that deals with it, in the end, not only is the problem unsolved, it also leaves an impression of pretentiousness."
"I think, considering why Heaven always wrongs oneself, why trouble always finds you, is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s human nature, not everyone is a hard-working puppet, leave it till after the task is settled to think about it."
"Look." With that, Chichu Chun suddenly tossed an ’Arbor Baby’ to Xu Xiaoyou.
"I sewed it myself, but I advise you to throw it away quickly, it will explode."
Xu Xiaoyou raised an eyebrow, caught the ’Arbor Baby’, examined it in her hand for a long time, and finally sensing something, quickly threw it aside.
Sure enough, as a dazzling light erupted, the ’Arbor Baby’s stubby limbs flailed, flew into the sky, and burst into a heart-shaped firework.
"I keep my word." Chichu Chun smiled triumphantly.
"I’ll give you a piece of advice too." Xu Xiaoyou’s face was lined with black marks, she smirked, "You’d better run fast, or I’ll send your video begging for mercy to them."
"I keep my word."
"Hey, hey, that’s not fair at all!" Chichu Chun stepped back two steps, embarrassment clear on her face.
Seeing Xu Xiaoyou about to follow through, Chichu Chun rolled her eyes and turned to run.
The two girls began a chase on the plain, their laughter slowly drifting away with the wind.
In no time, Chichu Chun’s stamina was exhausted, caught up by Xu Xiaoyou, and they collapsed onto the ground.
Xu Xiaoyou calmly pinned Chichu Chun’s hands, using her legs to immobilize the girl’s lower body, easily subduing the struggling Chichu Chun.
The latter blinked and raised her eyebrow, shooting a meaningful look.
"Need me to cry out to play along with you?"
Xu Xiaoyou couldn’t be bothered to argue, she rolled over to lie on the grass facing the sky.
"You give up this easily? What about your word your bond?" Chichu Chun propped her face on her hand, looking provocatively.
"I’m considering whether to show them the chat logs when you just met me."
Seeing Xu Xiaoyou was serious about it, Chichu Chun’s face flushed instantly. She hastily grabbed Xu Xiaoyou’s hand, coughed twice, and spoke fiercely.
"Doing that makes you no different from that synchronized destruction leader, can’t handle the loss, right!"
"Let me think, who was the one staying up late at night, calling out You, You like a lovestruck little fangirl, smiling foolishly at the screen..."
Xu Xiaoyou remained unmoved, and Chichu Chun quickly lowered her stance to beg for mercy.
With her goal achieved, Xu Xiaoyou dropped the curtain.
Chichu Chun’s face was crimson, her forearm blocking her face, secretly spying on Xu Xiaoyou’s nonchalant expression, after a while, she gritted her teeth.
"Dare to use this embarrassing history to threaten me again, and you’ll be on my must-kill list!"
"I’m such a fool, really," Chichu Chun clicked her tongue, "Why couldn’t I see your true colors sooner."
Xu Xiaoyou said nothing, her expression full of subtle meaning.
After a long while, Xu Xiaoyou suddenly burst into laughter, finally laughing aloud until tears were almost coming out, then wiping her eyes.
It had been a long time since she felt so at ease.
"I say," Chichu Chun broke the silence suddenly, "If you were the leader in the movie, holding the power of synchronized destruction, facing an aggressive army, what decision would you make?"
"I would make the same choice as that leader," Xu Xiaoyou replied.
"Is that so?"
"Responsibility, mission, justice, perhaps none of it matters when faced with life and death."
"Then why..."
Xu Xiaoyou continued:
"I just think, no matter how harsh the environment, the resilience of life will drive them to try every means to survive, to root deeper and thirst for a trace of water."
"Civilization ruined is just ruined, everything disappears, everything ends."
"As long as people are alive, there is hope, the door to the future stands there, the chance of finding the key is slim, yet there is always the potential to open it."
Xu Xiaoyou looked at Chichu Chun:
"Someone once told me, the world is like a train heading toward dusk, they want to place the right of whether to disembark into the hands of the passengers."
"I don’t see it that way. I think most people in the world are always hesitating and wandering, missing the platform to stop at the slightest inattention, drifting along, repeated infinitely, and eventually getting lost in hesitation."
"They need someone to make a choice for them."
"If I live, I strive to bring them the best future, bearing infamy doesn’t matter."
"If I die, then pass on the flame of choice, let those who come after determine their own future."
