Chapter 51 Grafting
Chapter 51 Grafting
In the pitch-black prison, the guards hurried inside.
"Can you guys hurry up? I'm waiting to go back and gamble!"
Faced with the jailer who turned back to urge him on, Wu Dalang could only try to appease him no matter how impatient he was.
Things were about to succeed, so they couldn't afford to mess things up now, or Li Chong would never let him off the hook.
After catching up with the jailer who was leading the way, Wu Dalang said reassuringly, "We've brought quite a lot of things, so please bear with us, brother."
As he spoke, Wu Dalang handed over a few copper coins to show his sincerity.
Seeing the tangible benefits, the jailer's expression softened considerably.
He glanced back but couldn't help asking, "Speaking of which, Wu Er won't be staying here long; he'll be exiled thousands of miles away soon. What's the point of all this sending him food and bedding?"
"Look at your brothers, they can barely lift a blanket, what's the point?"
Wu Dalang's heart tightened, and he quickly stepped forward to embrace him, preventing him from looking closely.
He then replied with a smile, "When we do things, isn't it all for peace of mind? Wu Da helped me before, so if Wu Er is sentenced to death, I'll let it go. But since he's still alive, I should at least show some consideration."
The jailer shook his head dismissively.
However, considering the copper coin Wu Dalang had given him, he didn't say anything more.
After walking for a while, the jailer pointed to a cell not far away: "That's Wu Er's cell. Go take a look, but remember not to stay too long. I'm in a hurry to get back."
Wu Dalang glanced at him and casually laughed, "Since that's the case, then you can go back first, brother. We're all servants in the yamen, do you think we'd break you out of prison?"
"Prison break..."
After sizing up Wu Dalang and his companions, the jailer chuckled, "That's not the case."
With their physiques, barely able to lift a bedsheet, they dare to attempt a prison break? What are they thinking?
Anyway, they don't have the key, so they can't do anything about it.
After only a moment's hesitation, the jailer nodded in agreement: "Then you'd better hurry, or I won't be able to explain myself when Zhang asks questions later."
Wu Dalang thanked him repeatedly and sent him away with a big smile on his face.
When he returned to the group, Wu Dalang's face was no longer smiling; it was filled with tension.
He asked, "How is it? Is anyone else around?"
"No one's here. Just like the master said, Wu Er's cell is indeed secluded."
Wu Dalang felt much more at ease and waved his hand, "Hurry up and get started, don't waste time."
A man stepped out from behind him and began fiddling with the lock in front of Wu Song's prison gate.
Meanwhile, Wu Song, who was already in the prison, stood before them: "Who are you guys...?"
Because Li Chong hadn't told him exactly how to get him out, Wu Song didn't dare to ask any questions for the time being.
Wu Dalang handed over a set of yamen runner's clothes through the prison door: "The magistrate sent us. Change into these clothes quickly, and we'll take you out in a bit."
Taking the clothes instinctively, Wu Song hesitated, "Isn't this just escaping from prison?"
He had thought Li Chong would use some official means to get him out, but this was the unexpected method, which caught Wu Song off guard.
Wu Dalang could be humble and obsequious in front of Li Chong, but he was not so good-natured in front of Wu Song.
"Stop saying so much! The master personally sent several of us to rescue you, and you're still dawdling like this, delaying the master's business. You can't bear that responsibility!"
Seeing that Wu Dalang was urging him so urgently, Wu Song had no choice but to agree.
Since everyone present was a man, there was no point in feeling ashamed.
After taking off his prison clothes, Wu Song put on the yamen runner's uniform.
"Boss, the door's open!"
Wu Dalang didn't say anything, but just waved his hand, and the men behind him immediately carried the rolled-up blanket into the prison and got busy.
At first, Wu Song didn't pay any attention, but after he changed his clothes and glanced at it, he was immediately horrified.
"You...you've killed someone?"
The seemingly ordinary blanket actually contained a dead body, which explains why it took two people to carry it.
Wu Song, disregarding the fact that his clothes were a bit too small, straightened his body and walked over. Upon closer inspection, he found it to be a corpse.
He stared at Wu Dalang with a grim expression: "Did you kill this man?"
The questioning tone made Wu Dalang very unhappy.
Yes, you, Wu Song, have been chosen by the master for some reason, but I am also working for the master. What right do you have to question me?
One was a prisoner, and the other was a constable from the yamen. Could Wu Dalang swallow this insult?
"Why do you care so much?" Wu Dalang replied irritably. "Hurry up and change your clothes, cover your face, and come out with us later."
Unexpectedly, Wu Song remained silent. After glancing at the corpse a few times, he silently began to take off his clothes.
"What are you doing?" Wu Dalang frowned and stepped forward to stop him.
But his strength was no match for Wu Song's. With just a slight sway, Wu Dalang stumbled and fell to the side.
His brothers nearby were not happy about this and rushed over to tell Wu Song to be more sensible.
Fortunately, Wu Dalang still retained his senses and knew that this was not a place for noise. After stopping his brother, he forced himself to ask, "Brother Wu Song, what are you doing? We're about to escape, please don't do anything foolish."
If he couldn't handle this matter well, Wu Dalang wouldn't be able to explain himself, so he could only swallow his anger and ask for the reason.
Wu Song replied solemnly, "Although I am a rough man, I know the principle of not implicating others. I cannot allow someone to die innocently because of someone like me! Please inform the magistrate that Wu Song cannot help him."
"you……"
Wu Dalang really didn't expect this person to be so stubborn.
He could only offer kind words of advice.
"Brother Wu Song, you've misunderstood. We didn't kill this man; a few of us stole him from the mortuary. If we didn't leave a corpse for you, the master wouldn't be able to explain to his superiors."
"Really?" Wu Song paused in his movements.
Wu Dalang quickly made a promise.
After hesitating for a moment, Wu Song stopped what he was doing: "If that's the case, then it's alright."
After a moment's thought, he waved for the others to step back and stood in front of the corpse.
Worried that something else might go wrong, Wu Dalang had no choice but to agree.
"thump."
Wu Song knelt down and kowtowed three times to the corpse: "Brother, I, Wu Song, don't know you, but you died for me today, so you are my benefactor. I don't have much on me, so I can only kowtow to you a few times. If I ever become rich, I will definitely give you a grand funeral."
After sincerely kowtowing three times, Wu Song got up, dressed, and said, "Let's go."
After hearing Wu Song's statement, Wu Dalang and the others couldn't help but admire him secretly; he was indeed a good man.
Their attitude also became much more amiable.
Then, the group slammed the corpse's face against the wall several times until it was completely unrecognizable. They then quickly withdrew, and everything went very smoothly.
Wu Song regained his freedom.
